Last Saturday, a tragic incident happened in Itaewon, Korea. So far, it is said that 156 people have passed away and 172 people have been injured as large crowds have flocked to the small alley next to the Hamilton Hotel to enjoy the Halloween festival. First, Center on Philanthropy would like to begin this newsletter by praying for the well-being of those who died in the Itaewon disaster. The center sincerely hope those injured will return to their daily lives as soon as possible.

Assessing the Health and Well-being of Asia’s Social Sector

Center for Asia Philanthropy and Society(CAPS) holds policy research biennially through Doing Good Index(DGI). DGI identifies the enabling and impeding factors for private social investment and philanthropy for 18 Asian economies using a data-driven, evidence based approach. It is a globally cited resource and policy guide for strengthening philanthropic ecosystems in Asia. DGI 2022 is the third one, which means 2022 is the sixth year since CAPS first launched DGI.
Center on Philanthropy at The Beautiful Foundation, as a partner, has been in charge of surveying Korea’s philanthropic ecosystem and disseminating towards Koreran audiences for a better understanding. The center also translated executive summary of the full report.

Unlocking Cross-border Philanthropy in Asia

Give2Asia(G2A) published a new report, assessing the limitations and chances for international philanthropic giving across 15 markets based on years of research effort. G2A interviewed donors, intermediaries, and nonprofits in order to see which market already has infrastructure that can afford to expand the ecosystem for cross-border philanthropy. The Center on Philanthropy at The Beautiful Foundation has translated the executive summary of the report for Korean audiences to take a deeper look
