The Doing Good Index (DGI) is measured in collaboration with the Centre for Asian Philanthropy and Society (CAPS), with the participation of 17 Asian countries. This index evaluates four key areas related to public benefit activities and provides a structured assessment. The goal is to identify optimal conditions for individuals, corporate donors, civil society organizations, and governments to engage in the public benefit sector while presenting best practices in each area.

As a partner in Korea, Center on Philanthropy at The Beautiful Foundation has been involved in the index measurement since its inception, analyzing the current state of Korea’s philanthropic environment. On February 13th, 2025, a workshop was held where all partners gathered to prepare for the upcoming 2026 survey. A representative from Center on Philanthropy attended the workshop, engaging in discussions about the latest donation trends and issues in different countries while sharing insights on Korea’s standing.

Keynote Speech by Dr. Ruth Shapiro, Chief Executive of CAPS

The workshop began with a keynote speech by Dr. Ruth Shapiro, CEO of the Centre for Asian Philanthropy and Society. Dr. Shapiro shared in-depth insights on how the social sector should respond to today’s significant social changes. She emphasized that “At a time when the world is undergoing a period of turbulence, it is crucial to have active and productive discussions on how the social sector can take the lead.”

Her speech resonated deeply with the attendees, highlighting the importance of social change and the need for an appropriate response. As Dr. Shapiro pointed out, this workshop provided a meaningful platform for crucial discussions at a pivotal moment. Participants from various countries exchanged perspectives and solutions, collectively reflecting on the future direction of philanthropy.

DGI 2024 & 2026 : Looking Back and Moving Forward

The workshop also reviewed the Doing Good Index 2024, which was conducted in 2023 and published last year. Discussions were held on structuring the survey for the upcoming 2026 edition. The previous report attracted significant interest, with over 1,400 attendees at various events, 1,022 downloads of the report, and 3,401 visits to the online dashboard. The findings were featured in 58 articles and covered in four radio and broadcast segments.

During the session, participants reflected on past experiences and exchanged ideas on the steps needed for further improvements. The theme for the upcoming Doing Good Index 2026 was introduced, and participants shared useful tips for conducting the survey effectively in their respective countries.

Addressing the Trust Deficit

The final discussion focused on the prevalent issue of trust deficit, which affects most countries. Representatives from each country shared their perspectives on the level of trust in the nonprofit sector within their respective societies. CAPS presented survey findings that illustrated trust levels across the 17 participating countries.

While Korea showed an increase in nonprofit trust between 2020 and 2024, the overall trust level remained significantly lower than that of other countries in the same category. Among the 17 nations, five experienced a decline in trust, seven reported no significant change, and only a few showed notable improvement.

Meeting fellow partners and establishing new networks made the workshop even more meaningful. Moving forward, Center on Philanthropy at The Beautiful Foundation will continue researching Korea’s philanthropic landscape, ensuring that a strong and sustainable culture of giving is fostered in Korean society.
