Youth Participation on Philanthropy in Korea: From the Youth Allocation Committee of The Beautiful Foundation

This study was presented at a paper session of the ISTR Asia Pacific 2019 Conference held in Bangkok, Thailand on 15-16 July 2019.

Research Summary

The Youth Allocation Committee (YAC) is a youth-focused and youth-administered grant committee within the Beautiful Foundation (BF) in Korea. Since 2017, BF has developed a youth leadership program designed to nurture the next generation of change-makers committed to positive change in themselves, their communities and the society. The purpose of this study was to evaluate how the activities of YAC carried out to change in youth and communities, and how they were differentiated from the existing other philanthropic activities in Korea.

The 2022 Global Philanthropy Environment Index provides comprehensive information about the philanthropic environment in 91 countries and economics around the world by measuring the 1) Operation, 2) Tax and Fiscal Issues, 3) Cross-Border Philanthropic Flows, 4) Political Environment, 5) Economic Environment, and 6) Socio-Cultural Environment in order to find out the incentives and barriers to philanthropy. This report aims to understand the status and implications of philanthropy environment in Korea.

The Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy has been conducting the Global Philanthropy Tracker study every two years to measure the flow of charitable giving across countries. The Beautiful Foundation became a partner in the project in 2019 to provide information on Korea’s cross-border giving.
This report was written jointly by The Center on Philanthropy at The Beautiful Foundation and Dr. Sung-Ju Kim, assistant professor of social work at North Carolina State University.

[Paper] COVID-19 and nonprofit organizations in South Korea

To understand the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on nonprofit organizations in Korea, this study initiated an online survey with nonprofit leaders and staff from May 11 to May 30, 2020. Results showed that nonprofits in Korea are facing unprecedented disruptions in their ability to deliver crucial and essential services for the community. Notwithstanding the identified difficulties, nonprofits in Korea strive to find alternative ways to maintain their services for the community.
